Flowers to wear is a growing trend!

It has been a hectic 3 days in Guangzhou for the world flower council summit. Together with another 11 designers from allover the world, we have demonstrated and designed for 3 large scale demonstrations and floral fashion shows. Such creativity and such excitement!

A noticeable growing trend in flower arranging these days, as shown by many of the designs in the show, is the wearability of flowers. Flowers now are not only to be in arrangements anymore, they have to be worn!!

See left for the hat design by Beijing designer

I consider this new direction of flower arranging an immensely challenging and exciting way forward. One of the dfesigners, who is from Beijing, did this amazing hat wil skeleton leaves. I think it looks stunning. Although these are really catwalk designs, scaling things down to a daily level can be quite inspirational.

Magnets are good for fixing on flowers

As for my piece, I wanted to create this high society elegance feeling but using ordinary materials. A high collar is constructed with ordinary canavas bags with black and white stripes printed on them. The bags are cut into pieces and are wired inside. For the flowers, I used the classic open roses. I applied some new techniques to fix them on by using magnets. This technique is very easy and provides almost unlimited flexibility and versatility.

The result of this is a light-weight, yet rich and striking piece of wearable floral.

There are other interesting floral observations too, but I will share them with you in the next few updates.
